“We encourage that,” he tells ABC Radio. “If you come to a show, you can buy a USB wristband at every show and walk away with [a recording of] that night’s show. And then fans have been taking those over the years now, at my shows and at Matchbox shows and they share them over the Internet — their favorite shows, their favorite songs. There’s certain nights where we might play a cover that we only do one night, and they have that and they can share it with each other.”

In fact, was among the first acts to make those “same night” recordings available to fans on USB wristbands. says he inspired Bruce Springsteen to start doing the sam e thing.
“He was having a conversation about not liking the, the YouTube generation, all the songs are out there and [he] can’t control the quality of it,” recalls. “And I told him about these wristbands. And two weeks later I read an article where he was talking about how he was gonna start using them and he gave me credit for turning him on to it.”
“I think it’s a good way to have…’bootlegs’ out there, but they’re coming from your [mixing] board, [so] you control the sound quality,” he adds.
As for fans posting their own recordings of his songs on YouTube, says he actually finds it very helpful sometimes.
“I can’t tell you the amount of times we’ve been rehearsing a song that we haven’t played in a long time and you can’t remember like, a certain way that you did it or what guitar you played on it,” he laughs. “So you go on YouTube and you find a video that somebody had made of it. And it helps you figure out how you played the song years ago.”
’s tour wraps up November 10 in Morristown, NJ, having been extended to make up for the dates that were canceled. The Great Unknown comes out August 21.
